This route starts in a very interesting little island/peninsula community (Sabula) that hangs out in the Missisiipi River. Start your drive by exploring the little town of Sabula and the boat docks ... I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to grow up in a small little river bank community like this! After touring Sabula, cross east over the river into Illinois and check out Savanna. Then get on the road and your journey changes from a "small town USA" tour to a scenic journey through river valley country and along bluffs and hills. This section takes the driver through some bluffs, with some good hills and some nice views. Continue heading north and the scenery only gets better! It is here where the ride follows the Mississippi pretty closely at times and offers very nice scenic views. Watch when the route joins on to Route 20 as there is an overlook tower that provides some wonderful scenery viewing opportunities. Overall, plenty of bluffs, curves, trees, hills, and general great views on this trip in a blessed corner of Illinois.
Towns/Cities You'll Pass By/Through
Sabula and Savannah are nice but the real "urban gem" on this trip is Galena. Plenty of shops and lovely antique architecture abound in this great little town!
Attractions & Points-of-Interests Along the Way
The amenities are excellent. You'll pass through Palisades State Park providing some more great views from the top of the bluffs. Also at the back of the Savanna Army Depot there is a scenic overlook over the river (this is a relatively unknown place). The small towns stops along the way are also wonderful, providing not only fuel and food but snapshots of life in different simple Midwest communities that help make our country great. Lodging is available at either the stop point or the start point. Shopping in Galena is an experience in itself. Also, with a small detour, one could go to Chestnut mountain ski resort.

Attraction or Point-of-Interest recommendation: The description above recommends Galena Illinois but doesn't do it justice. It is really a destination that should be the focus of this ride. It has about anything you can imagine to do and see: art shops, restaurants, history, golf, etc......
