Attractions & Points-of-Interests Along the Way
You can get gas, food and find lodging in Gunnison or Crawford. Both ends of the Canyon offer many good places to pull off and look. There's is little traffic and blacktop is in great shape. The most traffic you'll see on this route is there for the deep section of the Black Canyon with its 1000 foot rock cliffs. Near Crawford you can drive off the main road on dirt, or pay to see the South rim off hwy 50. Hwy 92 is really spectacular all on its own.

Comments: I saw this road listed in a motorcycle magazine as one of the best roads in America. I decided to try it one day and finally got the chance this year. I really enjoyed it as I've traveled a lot of roads in Colorado and this stretch of black top is somewhat unique. It has an almost southwestern US canyon feel yet it takes you up into some beautiful green mountain areas. There are some nice places to pull over and take in views of the canyon too. I was sitting there at one of the overlooks just taking in the canyon view when all of a sudden a hawk floated up from the canyon and hovered just a few feet out in front of me while looking for prey below. He just kind of floated there for about 30 seconds and slowley dove down into the canyon and out of my view. I was there with my dad and we just looked at each other without a word and smiled as it was so cool we didn't want to speak to ruin the moment.

Comments: Drove this with a buddy in August '08. Beautiful scenery with plenty of places to pull off and look, long gentle curves and blacktop in great shape for the most part. Don't worry about the lack of amenities, its not that long of a drive although getting there can take time too.
