This is southwest Texas scenery at its best --- gritty, isolated and inspiring. You'll be treated to expansive views of the desert and rugged mountains and views of the mighty Rio Grand river as it divides Mexico from the US.
Towns/Cities You'll Pass By/Through
For the most part you are driving long stretches with a few small towns along the way. There are a couple of nice towns. I describe them in the attractions section below.
Attractions & Points-of-Interests Along the Way
This road trip really will surprise you with the accommodations and attractions offered in this remote part of Texas. There certainly are vast stretches of the ride that will be in complete isolation and you really need to make sure you manage your fuel situation appropriately. However, there are a number of towns along the way that have many great places to eat & spend the night at ... towns such as Alpine, Study Butte, Lajitas, and Presidio. Some things you may want to see & do along the way are visiting the old mission just outside of Presidio & the movie set near Presidio as well; the Terilingua Ghost town.
Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park is a favorite stop of mine. Don't miss it!

Comments: This really is a great drive including staying in the park, camping out under the stars. Also you can drive out to Van Horn and turn North to Carlsbad Caverns to make it an even greater trip!

Attraction or Point-of-Interest recommendation: Big Bend National Park is a must stop!!! We took this trip last fall and it was a very big surprise how nice it was. The park offered much more than I anticipated and I took a lot of pictures. I'm taking my in-laws out here in the summer when they visit. Check out their website as it gives a good rundown of what the park offers. Nice road trip too!!!

Attraction or Point-of-Interest recommendation: The McDonalds observatory near ft davis tx is very interesting and worth a tour. Also, if you enjoy seeing National Parks or are into caving or spelunking, if you do this road trip you need to take the time to head north into New Mexico and see Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
