This road trip abounds with amazing scenery. You'll travel along the Snake River out to Asotin and then twist and ascend up to the top of the Butte. There are views of the cliffs of Hells Canyon to the southeast. As you approach Rattlesnake Pass the scenery changes from grasslands to lush forest. When it opens up you get to see the grassy canyon that you'll be descending. There are many look-out points where you can stop and take in the beautiful views. One of the most scenic ones is Joseph Canyon Overlook with an majestic view of the historic Nez Pierce winter homelands and the peaks of the Wallowa Mountains (Blue Mts. of Oregon) to the south. Continuing south along the route you'll go through 25 miles of woodlands and taking a sharp right turn you'll find a breathtaking view of Eagles Cap peak and the Wallowa range. In spring the grasslands are bright green and the mountains are still covered with snow making for an astounding contrast. Check out Wallowa Lake early in the morning and you'll see some spectacular views.

This is a rural scenic drive passing through southeast Washington state down to eastern Oregon. The towns you pass through are small and highlights are detailed below in the Attractions section.

There are hardly any amenities along this route. Make sure you fill up before you leave because there's no gas from Asotin to Enterprise. Food, drinks and souvenirs are available in Grogan's Oasis. Just past Anatone you'll find Fields Springs State park with a variety of camping opportunities. At Wallowa Lake there is Wallowa State park offering camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. There's also Wallowa Lake Lodge that has a 4 star restaurant and wonderful prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays . In summer there's a tramway that you can take up the mountains. Joseph is a friendly little town where you'll find plenty of shops, inns, and good eateries.
